Aquatic litter

thalassia aporimata Aquatic litter is one of the biggest problems of the aquatic ecosystems. Uncontrolled consumption, disposal and accumulation of garbage cause problems to the organisms and subsequently to the normal function of ecosystems. For many years humans considered the oceans as the ideal place to throw trash and humans wastes. The delay in development of policies and measures for their treatment led to the exacerbation of the problem resulting in a significant volume of waste being added to the oceans. It is urgent the mentality shift, which in combination with effective measures will lead to the improvement of the state of aquatic ecosystems. ISea through its projects focuses on the establishment of research projects on aquatic litter. Its aims are to provide answers to qualitative composition and distribution of aquatic litter in Greek waters and coasts in order to develop appropriate policies at both public, and private level. An additional aim constitutes the public awareness focusing on the school community.

You could easily cleanup a beach and collect data about the area. You could find a beach close to you and contact us in order to help you design your cleanup step by step.

Beaches are major recreational areas, where people enjoy a wide range of activities such as swimming and fishing. Although all of us agree on their significant role, there are very few of those who takes care of them. Most people leave their mark on beaches by throwing their trash in these areas. Trash initially destroys the aesthetics of the landscape and gradually enters marine ecosystems, causing major problems for marine organisms.

Every year more than 100,000 turtles and marine mammals, such as dolphins and whales, and more than 1 million birds die from litter. While at the same time cause major problems for a wide range of organizations. Furthermore, it is very possible for parts of scrap to end up on our plates through the food chain!!!
In iSea we consider it very important to continue the beach cleaning action and simultaneously the data collection, in order to identify sources of pollution and to organize awareness campaigns aiming directly to eliminate the problem. Moreover we replace plastic bags with resuable bags in order to reduce the impact of plastics in cleanup events and set a example of good practice. The participants keep the reusable bags so they could easily organize the next cleanup event!
