New publication for the conservation and management of chondrichthyans in the Mediterranean Sea
Shark and ray conservation efforts face many challenges. In the Mediterranean, more than half of shark, ray and chimaera species face the risk of extinction, even though a variety of international, regional, and national rules and regulations apply directly and indirectly.
To support stronger science-based conservation policies, our recent collaborative study together with the University of Padova, the University of Patras, the University of Plymouth, and WWF Mediterranean Marine Initiative:
- highlights gaps, overlaps, and inconsistencies in current management practices,
- showcases case studies in Greece, France, Tunisia and Turkey, and
- presents recommendations and additional tools that will benefit shark, ray and chimaera conservation in the basin.
