The World Environment Day, on June 5, celebrates its 45th anniversary! The day was instituted in 1972 by the United Nations and this year is dedicated to “connecting people to nature”. The World Environment Day aims to raise public awareness and to inform citizens, businesses, public bodies and those who are in any way connected to the natural environment about the immediate need to protect our planet.  Nowadays, the crucial issues that the world’s ecosystems face are more than obvious. Human activities have left indelible marks with severe and negative effects even on the most inaccessible parts of the earth, from the “roof of the sky”, on the top of the Himalayas, to the shallow depths of the oceans, in the Tomb of Mariana. In both cases it is characteristic that these particularly vulnerable and unique ecosystems are at risk from pollution, which is ubiquitous!

ISea, an Environmental Organization for the Protection of Aquatic Ecosystems, carries out a series of actions in order not only to reduce pollution, study and evaluate its effects, but also to inform, raise awareness and engage the public in its prevention and reduction. To achieve this, iSea implements the “Home sweet… beach, keep it clean!!!” program. The beaches, the boundary between sea and land, are areas of particular ecological and biological value. At the same time, there are important recreational areas where a wide range of activities, such as swimming and fishing, are carried out. Thus, everyone agrees on their high importance. Still, very few finally take care of them. People leave beaches, but their footprint remains, as well as human trash. These initially destroy the aesthetics of the landscape, while gradually entering the marine and coastal ecosystems, causing significant problems for the organisms living in them.

In the framework of the World Environment Day, on Monday 5/6, we will carry out a coastal and underwater cleaning along with the Ocean Diving Center on the coast of Lagomandra, in Sithonia.
