Ioanna Tzioga2026-02-18 16:03:542026-03-27 08:14:44ErimitisAccording to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN, 2008) a Protected Area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values whose effective management can ensure the resilience of the local communities to climate crisis and offer a nature-based solution towards climate change mitigation.
Greece has made significant political commitments to the “30×30” goal (protect at least 30% of the world’s land and ocean areas by 2030), but faces substantial challenges in achieving effective management of its Marine Protected Areas
iSea aims to improve and strengthen the protection within the existing Marine Protected Areas, but also to expand their coverage. To achieve this, we work closely with the local communities, the management units and the local authorities in order to establish strong partnerships and address the challenges linked to the management of Marine Proptected Areas through all stakeholder engagement, the implementation of the existing regulations, the scientific research and the suggestion, improvements and enforcement of Action Plans
