Name an Angel Shark

They look like rays, but they’re actually flattened sharks! In fact, angel sharks are among the most endangered shark species in the world!!!

By donating €200 and choosing a name for the first shark in Greece to be tagged with a satellite tag, you will actively contribute to their conservation.

With your donation, you can name the angel shark that was tagged through a collaboration with the fishers of Plaka in Lemnos Island, and our partners from around the world! You’ll also receive updates about the species and learn about this individual from the data we collect over the coming months!

Why get involved?

Angel sharks, once abundant throughout the Mediterranean, are now on the brink of extinction. Until 2018, very little was known about their presence in Greece, even though it may be the only country where all three Mediterranean angelshark species still occur.

Thanks to our work, our knowledge of these remarkable species has grown significantly:

  • We have deployed the first-ever satellite tag on an angel shark in Greece.
  • A total of 33 angel sharks have been released.
  •  We have mapped their distribution and identified Important Areas for angel sharks in Greece.
  • We have assessed the conservation status of all three angel shark species in Greece for the Greek Red List of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA).
  • We have informed and trained fishers on how to protect and safely release these species.

Name this shark and support our research into the species’ distribution and behaviour in the region!

How can you participate?

What you will receive:

  • A personalised certificate featuring the name you chose and information about your individual angelshark.
