NEW MEASURES FOR THE PROTECTION OF FORMICULA ISLET: AWARENESS IN ACTION

In collaboration with the Municipality of Xiromero, last week we organized another day full of action to inform the public about the new measures regulating access to Formicula islet. This time, our actions were focused on Aetoloakarnania!

On Sunday, May 24th we returned to Mytikas, where we visited more than 20 tourism related businesses and informed them about the provisions of the recent Ministerial Decision that now shields Formicula. In addition, we distributed essential informational materials to ensure that all boat captains and visitors are updated on the new regulations in force.

We also had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with locals, business owners and fishers about the ecological value of the area, the new protection measures and the ongoing challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the effective protection of Formicula!

The event was warmly welcomed by the Deputy Mayor of Xiromero Mr. Vasilis Polyzos and the President of the Community, Mr. Dimitris Faros. The urgent issues of overtourism and illegal fishing in the area were thoroughly presented by iSea, Tethys Research Insitute and Blue Marine Foundation. Local authorities expressed their strong support for the initiative, commiting to spread awareness of the protection measures thoughout the community and among visitors. All parties agreed that the collaboration among stakeholders is essential to ensure that regulations are effectively implemented to protect Formicula from this summer!

Once again, we were insired by the kids who stood up for Formicula’s protection. Nautilus Diving Center presented the educational project that actively involved the next generation, raising awareness about the local biodiversity, and more importantly, giving them the opportunity to raise their voices, These young advocates submitted their formal requests for urgent protective measures to the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Their involvement contributed to make it happen, showing that active citizenship can influence a positive change!

At the same time, attendees were captivated by the unique habitats and charismatic species of Formicula islet, shoecased through the lens of award-winning photojournalist and iSea collaborator, Dimitris Tosidis. His breathtaking imagery created a powerfull emotional connection with the islet and inspired people to action!

Our work with the local community and visitors and commitment to keep them informed and support in overcoming any challenged will continue in the coming period.

Let’s work together this summer to ensure measures are implemented to Protect Formicula!
