The duckbill eagle ray, scientifically known as Aetomylaeus bovinus, is a large species of ray. It is found throughout the Greek seas, with lower densities around Crete and higher densities in closed bays. It inhabits both the seabed and the water column, including estuaries, lagoons, and the continental shelf, at depths of up to 150 meters. It is frequently caught as bycatch in both professional and coastal fisheries, using towed gear and nets, and is sometimes targeted by amateur fishers. In some cases it is kept for consumption, while in others it is discarded. Like other rays of the same family, it has a low reproductive capacity, giving birth to only 3-6 young per litter, which makes it particularly vulnerable to fishing pressure. Due to the intensification of fishing throughout its range, combined with its low productivity and general decline in populations, populations have declined by more than 80% in the last 51 years. As a result, the species is classified as Critically Endangered according to IUCN criteria.
