SPINY BUTTERFLY RAY

The Spiny Butterfly Ray, scientifically known as Gymnura altavela, is one of the largest rays in the Mediterranean. It inhabits sandy and muddy areas, primarily in shallow waters below 50 meters, although it can be found at depths of up to 150 meters. Its presence in Greek waters is rare and limited to specific areas. Due to intense fishing activity in recent decades, its population has declined by over 80%, as it is often caught as bycatch in driftnets. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is classified as Critically Endangered.
