“Screening of the acclaimed documentary OCEAN with David Attenborough in Lefkada”

The environmental organisation iSea, the Tethys Research Institute, the Blue Marine Foundation and the Connect Ionian, in collaboration with the Lefkada Public Library, D-marin Lefkas Marina and Sunsail, are inviting you to the screening of the international documentary film “OCEAN with David Attenborough”. The screening has been organized as part of the Revive Our Ocean initiative.

The screening will take place on Friday, September 11 at 20:00, at the Lefkada Public Library, as part of our work to strengthen the effective implementation of the protection measures of Formicula islet.

“OCEAN with David Attenborough” delivers a powerful message of hope for the future of our oceans. It showcases the extraordinary beauty of the underwater world, the contemporary threats it faces, as well as inspiring success stories demonstrating that nature can recover when it is effectively protected.

The film’s spectacular imagery and powerful messages provide the perfect opportunity to explore one of Greece’s most important marine biodiversity treasures in the region, the Formicula islet.  Formicula is an important refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal, hosting rare species and fragile ecosystems that have survived away from intensive human activity. It became widely recognized as an important refuge for the Mediterranean monk seal, and following the systematic work of  iSea, the Tethys Research Institute and the Blue Marine Foundation, its ecological importance was recognized through the relevant Ministerial Decision establishing specific protection measures, aiming to ensure that human presence does not disrupt the particularly sensitive ecosystems of the islet and the surrounding marine areas.

To strengthen its protection and promote the effective implementation of conservation measures, our work continues by raising awareness among residents and visitors, in communication with tourism businesses, while also supporting the protection of the marine area of Formicula by enhancing its surveillance in collaboration with the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA), the Coast Guard and relevant authorities.

Within this framework, the screening will be followed by a discussion focusing on the Marine Protected Areas of the Ionian Sea, and specifically the area of Formicula. The discussion will feature representatives of iSea, the Ionian Dolphin Project, implemented by the Tethys Research Institute, D-marin Lefkas Marina, and Sunsail Greece.

The film will be screened in English with Greek subtitles. Admission is free and seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to venue capacity.

The event forms part of the national effort to raise awareness of the importance of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and of the international 30×30 target — the protection of 30% of the world's oceans by 2030. The screening is organised within the framework of the nationwide initiative Revive Our Ocean Greece, coordinated by the Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF), under the auspices of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (NECCA) and National Geographic Pristine Seas, with the support of the Athina I. Martinou Foundation, the A. G. Leventis Foundation, the Costas M. Lemos Foundation, and the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center. Media sponsorship is provided by ERT.
