Fishers and the Sea: From Knowledge to Action
Fishers spend their life at sea and are among the first to observe the changes taking place in the marine environment. Their ecological knowledge and experience are valuable for understanding environmental challenges and identifying possible solutions.
At the same time, they are the ones who need to adopt responsible practices in order to safeguard the marine resources on which their livelihoods depend.
As part of the project “Fishing Tourism and Climate Change: Towards Sustainable and Innovative Practices,” iSea, in collaboration with the Panhellenic Association of Professional Fishing Tourism Operators (P.S.A.T.E.A.) and the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), is organizing a series of 3 free online webinars aimed at discussing the environmental challenges the marine ecosystems face and presenting ways in which fishers can contribute to their protection.
The webinars refer to professional fishers, as well as anyone interested in learning more about the current challenges faced by the marine environment.
Participants will have the opportunity to gain useful information, practical knowledge, and tools, while also taking part in discussions and exchanging ideas.
Posidonia meadows and ways to protect them, 15 October | 19:30–21:00
The first webinar focuses on Posidonia meadows, one of the most important habitats in the Mediterranean. The webinar will explore their ecological importance, the pressures they face, and practical ways to protect them, with particular emphasis on their interaction with fishing activities.
Invasive alien species and addressing the challenges they pose in Greek seas, 19 October | 19:30–21:00
The second webinar focuses on the presence and spread of invasive alien species in Greek seas, a challenge that affects marine ecosystems as well as fishing activities.
Marine plastic pollution, 21 October | 19:30–21:00
The third webinar is dedicated to one of the most significant threats to marine ecosystems, the marine plastic pollution. During it, the sources and impacts of plastic litter pollution will be adressed, as well as practical measures that can be adopted in our everyday lives towards zero waste.
